Constituted by public deed on July 21, 1998, the IVM is a non-profit cultural association, based at the Faculty of Law of Lisbon, whose purpose is the investigation, teaching and dissemination of Legal, Economic and Financial Sciences, regarding the securities market area and other areas of financial markets.

The institutional founders of the IVM are the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, the Securities Market Commission, the Lisbon Stock Exchange Association, the Porto Derivatives Exchange (currently EURONEXT) and the Portuguese Association of Banks, and the Insurance Institute of Portugal who joined in 2002 as an institutional associate.

Within the scope of its attributions and competences, we highlight some of the activities that have been developed since the constitution of the IVM:


  • Conducting, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law of Lisbon, postgraduate courses in Securities Law, in order to train and specialize professionals who must deal with this important area of Law;

  • Creation of a Voluntary Arbitration Centre, with the purpose of resolving conflicts in a specialized area such as securities;

  • Publication of works on the Law of Securities;

  • Creation of a Library and Documentation Center specialized in the Securities area.
